Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed into law important legislation to protect New Yorkers facing significant medical debt. The action fulfills an important goal of her 2022 State of the State address to protect consumers, including New York’s seniors. The action prohibits health care providers from placing liens on homes and assets to collect medical debt to create unfair pressure on struggling New Yorkers.
