Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed into law important legislation to protect New Yorkers facing significant medical debt. The action fulfills an important goal of her 2022 State of the State address to protect consumers, including New York’s seniors. The action prohibits health care providers from placing liens on homes and assets to collect medical debt to create unfair pressure on struggling New Yorkers. To help reverse the pharmaceutical industry's stranglehold on our health care system, on August 16, 2022 President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law.
