RC 44 Received 2 Awards at the 2024 RA
Local Community Service Award
Retiree Council 44 consistently evidences a belief in community service. In 2023 they demonstrated this by:
- Participating in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, Buffalo Public Schools Saturday Academy in collaboration with BTF Women’s Committee, and The Teacher’s Desk.
- Contributing $550 to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk,
- Awarding mini-grant funds to active teachers for innovative classroom program/projects.
Ken Kurzweil Social Justice Recognition Award
Retiree Council 44 consistently evidences a belief in social justice. In 2023 they demonstrated this by:
- Supporting survivors of domestic abuse by volunteering and collecting donations for a local women’s center.
- Assisting The Teacher’s Desk in packing 20,000 Pancho Packs, which were distributed to students in need.
- Advocating for educational justice, including supporting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
- Promoting healthcare advocacy.
- Supporting efforts to combat hunger and poverty.
- Picketing with local college faculty fighting for a fair contract.
- Publicizing and supporting NYSUT’s Fix Tier 6 initiative.
- Demonstrating labor solidarity by supporting striking workers and those attempting to organize.
- Advocating for racial justice via social media and in-person events.
- Championing women’s issues, history and rights.
